We are very lucky to have such a beautiful and charismatic stallion in Whippoorwill Aristocrat, however, the sire is only 50% of the equation; and some breeders think that the mare contributes even more to the foal than the stallion. Certainly it is important to have mares that are kind and genuinely like people as they teach their foals how to interact with humans. We are delighted to have three mares with outstanding movement, temperament and conformation to help develop our breeding program.
Our goal with our Breeding Program is to show and promote all of our horses. A broodmare is more than a uterus, because they give so much to the foal we want to make sure our mares are level headed athletes as well as our stallion.
Whippoorwill Calisto (Whippoorwill Newmoon x Whippoorwill Salus) 14.3h 1993 Buckskin Mare
“Cali” is here with us on Lease from Mary Jean Vasiloff. In 2001, shortly after foaling the Whippoorwill Aristocrat son, Whippoorwill Grandee (see Foals page), Cali almost died from mushroom poisoning. Diligent care brought her back to health, but the cold Connecticut winters are difficult for her compromised system. We are proud to be entrusted with her care, and thrilled to have a daughter of the athletic Whippoorwill Newmoon to breed.
“Cali” presented us with a lovely filly in April of 2006. This filly is truly stunning and we look forward to showing and eventually breeding her. Although we got Cali back in foal for a 2007 foal she slipped it, we will breed her again to Cat in 2007 and hope for a repeat of this athletic, correct and beautiful cross.

2000 15.2+ h Smokey Black Mare
"Filly" is Tonya's main saddle mare, although Echo and Ellie are ridden regularly as well.
In 2006 Filly and Tonya competed at Open Shows all season, scoring in the mid-60's and placing in classes of 15+ competing against warmbloods in Open competition.

Whippoorwill Felicity, as a four year old, placed 3rd out of 8 Morgans! We are thrilled to have Filly do so well at this high level of competition!
2005 was Filly's and my first year of showing monthly at Open Dressage Shows. We competed at some of the largest Open Dressage shows in the Mid-Atlantic. Filly and I scored consistently in the low to mid 60's at training level. We plan to move up to First Level for 2006.

Whippoorwill Electra (Whippoorwill Talisman x Whippoorwill Salus) - 2001 15.1+ h Black Mare
In 2007, Margaret Johnson bought this loving, talented mare to continue her riding career as well as a trusted trail mount and friend.
“Ellie” is the foundation of my dream-breeding herd of Classically bred, Sport Morgans. We bought her from Mary Jean Vasiloff as a yearling, our first horse purchased when we decided to become breeders with the guidance of Ina Ish.
I broke Ellie myself when she was 3-1/2 and she has never given me a minute of worry or problem. She is my “SUV” on the trails, and even green trusted enough to be a “packer” for inexperienced riders.
In October of 2005 I took Ellie to her first show. It was her first time off the farm since coming here as a yearling.
Being late meant I literally unloaded her and tacked up, walked her up to the ring- past the scary and loud Cover-All arena, the emu, the pack of goats across the field and into the ring we went for our her first test ever! We won the class with a score of 68%!
In the second test I rode more aggressively and we won that class with a 70.5% and better still, Ellie and I were high score for the show!
I am so tickled as she handled herself just the way all good Morgans should- she was calm, accepting of her new environment, and got down to work.
